I Am Tessa Kelley

Apr 09,2015

So, introductions are hard. Of course, there's the usual stating of the name, age, occupation, and so on, which I will obviously do. My name is Tessa Kelley. I'm 21 years old, and I am a student studying Exercise Science at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. These things give you a general idea about me, but they don't tell you that my mom named me after an author's daughter from a Baby Talk magazine, or that I'm actually abstaining from drinking adult beverages, or that if I could afford to have multiple majors, I would. It doesn't tell you that my mom is my best friend and soulmate, or that I wouldn't be able to live in a world that didn't allow me to travel, or that the scar on my shoulder is from riding my bike straight into a wooden mailbox when I was 11-years-old. But, at least now, you know there is this one girl who lives somewhere in Arizona, and her name is Tessa. I also answer to 'Tess'. My hope is that you learn a little bit more about me with each post that's published.

Since elementary school, I've had countless dream jobs -- from artist to architect to engineer to singer to actress to psychologist to travel blogger to athletic trainer to doctor... I could literally go on and on. I'm beyond ecstatic to start writing for HonorSociety.org, because it gives me a chance to exercise one of my aspirations of being a blogger. As a new intern writer, most of my posts will reflect two topics: philanthropy and study abroad. Currently, I am involved in two organizations on campus, the Student Philanthropy Council and Blue Key Honor Society, that treat service projects as one of the most important value. Every weekend, I get the chance to hang out with the other members and make a difference in our community. As for study abroad, I am currently preparing to study in Australia beginning in July for a full five months. I know a couple of people from Flagstaff who are currently on the east coast of Australia, who are sharing their experiences with others who might be interested in learning in a different country, and I want to be able to do the same.

My journey has barely started. It has taken me a little while, but I've become grateful for the speed bumps and dirt roads that have lead me to where I am in life. I know going forward that I will get flat tires and maybe I'll take a wrong turn or two or five. What's most important is that, come any situation, I will have learned more than what I do now. With each passing event, I can only hope I will react with grace and confidence in the fact that everything will be okay in the end. We only have one life, as far as I'm concerned. Why not live it in the moment and to the fullest that we can possibly live?
