What is the history of Tri-M?
Tri-M was founded in 1936 by Alexander Harley and his wife, Frances. At the time, Alexander Harley was the band director and Music Department Chairman at Maine Township High School East in Park Ridge, Illinois. It has been a program of MENC: The National Association for Music Education since 1983.
What are the requirements to be in Tri-M?
Music Participation – Enrolled in a school-sponsored music ensemble and/or class for at least two semesters. Academic Achievement – At least a 3.0 average in music courses as well as in other academic subjects. Character Strength and Service – Demonstrate leadership, service, and character in all activities.
What are the key benefits of being a member of Tri-M?
Those service opportunities Tri-M provides students also teaches leadership skills, from decision-making and planning, to holding positions in the honor society, to influencing younger students to get involved and become leaders themselves—as well as seeking out opportunities for learning and growth.
