Parading in Paris

May 25,2015

Ah, Paris.  One of the most famous and popular cities in the world.  The culture of this city is one that can’t be described, but only experienced.  If Paris is somewhere that you have thought about studying abroad or are going to/have studied abroad here, you have had the pleasure of experiencing one of the greatest cities—at least in my opinion—in the world.

I visited Paris while on a trip several years ago.  What stunned me the most about the city is that it is as fast-paced as New York City, yet everyone seemed to be relaxed and laid back.  There’s work to be done, but that’s no reason not to stop for a coffee or two.

The city of Paris is saturated with the latest fashion and the finest cuisine, and let’s not forget about the romance.  After all, Paris is the city of love.  I mean we named a kiss after the French.  It’s that serious.

Paris boasts some of the greatest attractions:  The Louvre, The Eiffel Tower, The Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Montmartre.  Not only will you get to live among these historic attractions, but you’ll also get to experience each and everyone of them.

My personal favorite is The Louvre.  I’m an art junkie (even though I don’t have a single artistic bone in my body), but this museum isn’t just for those who have a passion for art.  The history that is represented in the exhibits is bone chilling.  The Louvre collects some of the most breathtaking works of art from so many different cultures:  Greece, Italy, Egypt, France, and more.

You would see the Winged Victory of Samothrace, the statue that was the inspiration for the Nike swoosh; you would see many different Egyptian artifacts, including hieroglyphics from the time period; you would see Liberty Leading the People, a beautiful painting depicting the French revolution; you would see the Mona Lisa, one of the most famous—if not the most famous—painting in the world.  If you have the opportunity to visit The Louvre, take it. Don’t think twice about it; seize the opportunity.

One of the most notable aspects of French culture is their cuisine.  I’m sure you’ve all heard of their abstract palette; the French enjoy the taste of frog legs and snails. I know, I know, “That’s gross,” and “Why would anyone want to eat that?” but don’t knock it till you try it.  Snail legs are pretty tasty if you are a fan of garlic, and frog legs do taste just like chicken.  If you decide to study in Paris or any other part of France, be sure to experience all parts of their culture, even if the snails do seem a little weird.

This is an article topic that I would like to address each month.  These articles will highlight a different city that is perfect for a study abroad experience.  However, my experience has only extended to the UK and Europe, so please if you have studied on any other continent, I would love to share your experience and your stories.  Let me know; my email is [email protected].
