Why Two Can be Better than One

Mar 07,2016

Coming into college, I had a general idea of what major I would pursue for my undergraduate degree. I wanted to have a Psychology major in the hopes of being able to understand the human mind, and explain why people do what they do. Psychology would allow me to understand the science behind the chemicals in the brain, and also why people might group think or only have one voice while in a group of people. I chose this major coming to college, and took the introductory course. These courses provide an overview about the subject matter that would be covered in depth in the years to come. This class only strengthened my want to continue with this major.

After taking a couple of in-depth courses, such as Abnormal Psychology which goes in depth about all the mental disorders, and Social Psychology which covers why people act certain ways in a certain social situation, it was much more interesting. I loved every second of class time and work because it was no longer a class that I was just trying to pass, but a class I wanted to learn everything about to remember for my future. These concepts would be important down the road while I strived to help others.

Although, Psychology was the only major I planned on pursuing, I also found another major along the way. My second semester as a freshman, I was able to take a Sociology class for a liberal studies requirement for my degree. This class was all about the social problems occurring in the world today, and throughout the class I began to realize how much this class would help give me insight into other peoples’ perspectives. Sociology is the study of people, and the theories behind it all. I wanted to learn more about the ethical issues, and social problems that the world is currently facing in order to help prepare myself for the variety of people that I might come across in my life time.

With Psychology in mind, I wanted to add a major in Sociology to help give me not only the psychology behind the actions of the population, but also the environmental or cultural factors that can have an impact on an individual. I have taken several Sociology courses, helping me to understand other points of views from my classmates and from sociologists around the world. I have learned how the world can have an impact on a group of people such as homosexuals or those in poverty, and how it can potentially lead to a mental illness, where psychology can then come in to help me understand the mental illness aspect.

With these two majors, I have chosen to have a well-rounded view about people in general and how we all as a community live among each other. I will continue to learn about the powerful impacts that others can have on me, and in return the impacts I have can have on others. I chose these two majors to help fuel my desire to help others around the world.
