The Rangel Program awards up to twenty (20) fellowships of up to $34,000 annually towards tuition, room, board, books and mandatory fees for completion of a two-year master’s degree. Rangel Fellows are expected to obtain a degree in international affairs or another area of relevance to the work of the Foreign Service (such as public administration, public policy, business administration, foreign languages, economics, political science, or communication) at a graduate or professional school approved by the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center. Fellows who successfully complete the Rangel Program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive an appointment as a Foreign Service Officer, embarking on one of the most exciting and rewarding careers available. Rangel Fellows will participate in two internships. The first, an internship working for a Member of Congress in Washington, D.C., will occur in the summer after being selected and before the first year of graduate study. The second will be an overseas internship in a U.S. Embassy that takes place during the summer between the first and second years of graduate study. Fellows will receive mentoring from a Foreign Service Officer throughout the duration of the fellowship as well as during their early employment at the State Department. Awardees are expected to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2 throughout their period of study. Only U.S. citizens will be considered as applicants. Applicants must be in the senior year of their undergraduate study or have completed their undergraduate degree by June and must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall for a two-year program. A candidate’s community, academic, other extracurricular, and leadership activities will be considered. The application deadline for this program is in mid-January.
