“Commencing Micro Management!” ―Micro Manager #TheLegoMovie #Leadership

Jul 01,2015

According to Brickipedia,

Micro Manager is a type of robot used by Lord Business to control the citizens and prepare them to be Kraglized. Micro Managers vary with different weapons, shapes and instruments as seen with the sets. They have multiple eyes and black square heads. They are voiced by Doug Nicholas according to the commentary on the bonus features of the DVD.

Micro Managers are evil robots created by Lord Business. Their job is to ensure that everybody is in the right position and acting "perfectly" so that when they are kraglized, they look normal. They also take apart any creative, unusual models and rebuild them according to the instructions.

I have spent a good portion of my career listening to other mentees, coworkers, and friends talk about working with leaders who they would describe as "micro managers". If you have seen The Lego Movie you will understand that the main characters worked hard to overturn the control of their micro manager known as Lord Business. Lord Business wanted to control and constrict all of Lego land by restricting creativity and collaboration among all of the master builders.

Most people I have discussed micro managers with are determined to leave and move into a more collaborative work space, but what if learning to work with a micro manager is a better professional development experience? Have you ever worked with a "Lord Business" before? Is your current manager afraid of delegating work and allowing coworkers to come to their own creative solutions?

If so, I'm interested in finding out your ideas for working with micro managers.
