“Not all Money Weight the Same: Those came from Altruistic Philanthropist(s) weight Significantly More.”

May 22,2015

Perhaps since our houses, specifically, our bedrooms are not inundated with mosquitoes so the threat of being infected with malaria is negligible if not non-existence. Unfortunately, in underdeveloped country such as Africa, malaria is ravaging the lives of many innocents and unsuspecting victims. Last month, on April, 22nd 2015, the people of “The United Methodist Church,” through Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton made a monumental donation to the Global Fund to the tune of $9.6 million. The fund will unquestionably serve to not only bring a change but to optimistically eradicate malaria all together. Specifically, Dr. Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund clarified the large portion of the money “will allow hundreds of thousands of African children to sleep under a bed net, significantly improving their chances of living malaria-free lives.”

What different will a bed net make and for those who would like to know, thank you in advance for your curiosity. A million children under the age of 5 can be saved with insecticide bed net (WorldVision). Before you read on, allow your frontal cortex to soak up the information and find the reason within your conscience to see that statistically it’s roughly 3,000 children per day and to be exact it’ll be 2,734 children that can possibly be saved. In the event that the number might not resonate, that’s 2,734 children that can be saved: per day. Not sure about you but just the thought of seeing one dying child in front of my eyes will be enough to deter any aspirations I may have had of becoming a pediatrician.

Moreover, not quite to the tune of newspaper “when it bleeds, it leads,” but just to put in plain views how devastating it can be for a parent to bear witness to her beloved child, Timo, suffers excruciating pain. According Dr. Mandal, there are three classic bouts to malaria and they are: bouts of shivering cold, and then a complete 180 degree flip to a fever where, if not treated, it further exacerbates to stages of uncontrollable and profuse sweating (Mandal). What make matter worse is as a parent in an impoverished country, the closest clinic can be ten to twenty miles away with no readily accessible ambulance to momentarily alleviate fear and perchance cease your motherly tears with hope that Timo will be saved. Instead, shall the precarious predicament go awry, the last indelible images that will be ingrained into your helpless brain, in particular your hippocampus, are those of Timo coiled and snugged up like a wet shirt caught up in the rotating washer where even after you’ve managed to stop and untangle the predicament, the damages will have already been done. At best, even if Timo were to be saved, who’s to say there will be no medical implications as a consequence of him being inflicted and having suffered with what could have been entirely avoidable bouts of malaria had Timo had insecticide bed net for protection.

More importantly, the fund will help protect and nurture the future of our society: the children. Perhaps I’m casting an umbrella statement but to me the children has always been the crown jewel our existence. Case in point, if a news reporter were to ask President Barack Obama to reflect on one of the greatest moments in his life and she’ll most likely to receive, although it might be worded differently, the same answer: to witness to the birth of my child. So instead of thinking one opinion, one voice doesn’t make a difference, be that one voice and spread the word to ensure concerted efforts from noteworthy organizations will not be in vain as they strive to help nurture the future of our society.

P.s Next up will be an article on pre-studies such as: Pre-med, pre-dental, pre-law and etc. My goal is to hopefully ease the process for students with aspiration of pursuing such profession.
