Hit the Books!

May 26,2015

I am the type of person that will read any book; I love books of all kinds.  Mystery, drama, romance, novel, biography, autobiography, you name it, I’ll probably read it.  I am not the type to only read a certain type of book.  Usually, the type of book I will read depends on what type of situation or mood I am in.  For example, a couple of weeks ago, I was at a week-long leadership camp.  Every day was full of challenging activities, both physically and emotionally.  When we had down time, I would read.  Since I was doing mentally and physically challenging activities, I wanted to read a book that did not challenge me, one that I did not really have to think about.  There are other times where I am in the mood to learn something new, so I pick up a biography.  These biographies are mostly on my favorite political leaders, but also branch out into lesser known celebrities.  For this blog, I decided to briefly describe how I know I am in love with a book while also giving some advice on how to find your perfect book; this will maybe inspire you to discover a new genre or to rediscover one.

The way I can tell that I am in love with a book and the story is if I can relate with the character.  This mostly comes in the way of my emotions.  While I hardly ever cry at a book, I will usually get mad with the character, share in their triumphs, and feel despair at their tragedies.  This personal connection with the book’s character allows me the opportunity to immerse myself further into the story.

One tip I have is an old adage: don’t judge a book by its cover.  Actually try reading a book before you make fun of it or the people who read it.  I’ll admit it; I read the whole Twilight series, and while I will probably not reread the series, it was pretty good.  The first book actually went above my expectations for it.  When the series was first popular, I scoffed at it and thought I would never read it.  I did give it a chance, however, and it was interesting to read.  Along with this, do not be afraid to read a book because you think you will be made fun of because of it.  Who cares if you aren’t reading the “hip” book that everyone else is reading?  You’re setting yourself apart from the crowd and expanding your horizons.

To sum up this blog post, I dare each and every one of you to try a book that you never would have thought to try before.  You may end up loving it, and if you don’t, at least you tried.  This is the only true way to fully see what book genres work for you.  Let me know what you’re favorite ones are!
