Traditionally speaking, writing portfolios have been reserved for English and Journalism majors. However, with technology and the blogging world taking over the world by storm, students and professionals alike are publishing articles every minute throughout various industries. There are blogs out there from art to science to architecture. No topic is excluded now from the world of writing.
No matter what your major is, you should have an online writing portfolio. Your writing portfolio is one more way for you to demonstrate your skills and passion to a potential employer. It’s another opportunity for you to showcase yourself beyond your resume and cover letter. In a competitive job market, you want to make sure that you use every resource you have to show a potential employer why you’re perfect for the job.
Developing your writing portfolio is something that you can do any day and is an excellent way to develop knowledge for the field, even if you aren’t able to intern at that time. Through this, you’ll demonstrate to a potential employer that you are passionate and constantly willing to share the knowledge you have about the topic. This is the type of enthusiasm they want to see in a young new hire.
If you’re thinking to yourself right now that you’re not sure if you can do it because you don’t know how to create a blog or aren’t tech savvy, don’t worry. All HonorSociety.org members have access to their own blog through the membership platform for free. All the behind the scenes tech is already completed for you so all you have to do type in your article, add an image, and click save.
Another advantage to posting through the HonorSociety.org platform is that all member submissions are reviewed by the editors and can be chosen to be featured published articles in Elevate the HonorSociety.org magazine. That means that you can add that you have a published article to your resume.
Creating your writing portfolio also takes your HonorSociety.org profile to the next level. It’s important to always have your profile as complete as possible because you want to be ready if a potential employer searches for you online. When they see your profile, they will also be able to see that you have extensive writing about the industry that you’re applying for.
If you’re not sure what to write about, start with writing about why you’re passionate about the industry you want to work in. You can also post any papers that you wrote in class that you would love for a potential employer to see. If you’re worried because you don’t feel like an expert on that topic, don’t worry. Share what you DO know. There’s always someone out there who is a few steps behind you and will learn better from you than from someone who is miles ahead of them.
