Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Can scholarship money pay for housing?

Some scholarships can help pay for housing, while others are limited to tuition or specific educational charges. Check the written award terms and ask the financial aid office how the money may be used at your college.

Check location, amount, and timing

An award may cover a standard campus housing allowance rather than any housing cost you choose. Off-campus rent, deposits, summer housing, and meal costs may have separate rules or may be excluded. Do not assume “full tuition” includes living expenses.

Payment timing matters. A credit to your college account is not necessarily available in time for a lease deposit or an early rent payment. Ask how any eligible remaining funds are disbursed after school charges are applied.

Put the answer into practice

  • Identify whether housing and meals are permitted expenses.
  • Check on-campus and off-campus restrictions.
  • Confirm any allowance cap and covered period.
  • Ask when funds would actually become available.

Compare the award with a realistic housing budget before signing a financial commitment. The scholarship comparison guide helps identify costs that may remain your responsibility.
