Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How can you avoid procrastination in college?

Reduce procrastination by defining a small first action, scheduling a realistic start, and removing the distractions that repeatedly interrupt you. The aim is to make progress possible before you feel fully motivated.

Reduce the size and uncertainty of the first action

“Work on the paper” is vague; “open the prompt and write three possible questions” is actionable. If you avoid a task because you do not understand it, contact the instructor or a tutor rather than scheduling another unproductive block. If the task feels too large, divide it into a draft, feedback, and revision.

Use a short work period to begin, then decide the next step. Notice what triggers avoidance and adjust the environment or plan. Persistent difficulty may deserve a conversation with campus academic services; treating every struggle as laziness can prevent you from addressing its actual cause.

Your next steps

  • Name the smallest useful action you can take now.
  • Choose a start time and remove one recurring distraction.
  • Review what blocked progress and seek specific help.
