Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do you double major in college?

To double major, complete the requirements for two majors under your college’s rules. A double major often leads to one degree with two fields of study; a dual-degree arrangement may have different requirements and additional credits.

Map both programs before adding the second major

Meet with advisers for both departments and compare required courses, prerequisites, declaration rules, and limits on double-counting coursework. Make a term-by-term schedule using real course availability. Ask how the university records the majors and whether the programs can be combined within the same degree. Do not assume similar course titles satisfy both departments.

Choose the second major for a clear learning goal. Consider whether it would crowd out internships, research, employment, or recovery time. A minor or focused elective sequence may meet the same goal with a different workload. Honor Society’s career-planning guide can help you connect academic choices to work you want to explore. Review the financial effect of extra terms before committing to the expanded plan.

Your next steps

  • Confirm the distinction between a double major and dual degrees.
  • Check overlap rules with both departments.
  • Compare the full schedule with a minor or elective pathway.
