Honor Society® Expert FAQ

How do you improve academic writing?

Improve academic writing by making a clear claim, supporting it with appropriate evidence, and explaining how that evidence advances your reasoning. Strong grammar helps, but it cannot replace a coherent argument.

Revise the argument before polishing individual sentences

Read the assignment for purpose, audience, source requirements, and citation style. Give each paragraph a job: introduce a claim, analyze evidence, address a counterpoint, or connect ideas. After drafting, write a brief outline of what each paragraph actually does and revise gaps or repetition.

Ask a writing-center tutor or instructor for feedback on a focused issue, such as whether the evidence supports your conclusion. Keep your own authorship when using permitted editing assistance. Track sources while drafting so quotation, paraphrase, and your analysis remain distinguishable.

Your next steps

  • Identify the prompt’s required argument and evidence.
  • Check each paragraph’s purpose and reasoning.
  • Revise structure, then proof citations and sentence clarity.
