Goals and interests
- Career goal
"Having walked the path of incarceration myself, I'm now driven by a profound commitment to those rebuilding their lives. My career as a Parole Officer will be deeply rooted in this experience, combined with my education and heart, to offer genuine support. Beyond that, I dream of establishing community-based programs dedicated to real second chances, impactful mentorship, and ultimately, breaking the cycles that hold families back."
- Graduate school interests
My Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, with its specialization in Probation and Parole, has provided me with a robust theoretical framework and an invaluable understanding of the justice system. However, my most profound education has come from my personal journey, having walked the path of incarceration myself. This lived experience fuels my unwavering commitment to empowering formerly incarcerated individuals to rebuild their lives and, crucially, to break generational cycles. To amplify this impact and lead meaningful systemic change, pursuing a graduate degree is my essential next step.
I intend to apply to programs focused on either a Master of Public Administration (MPA) or a Master of Social Work (MSW). My preference leans towards an MPA with a concentration in non-profit management or public policy. While my current work as a Parole Officer will provide critical hands-on experience, an MPA would equip me with the comprehensive administrative, financial, and strategic leadership skills necessary to effectively launch, manage, and scale community-based programs like my long-term vision, "The Second Shift Project LA." I aim to understand not just how to help individuals directly, but how to build sustainable organizations, secure funding, analyze policy implications, and advocate for broader reform.
Alternatively, an MSW could offer a deeper dive into clinical understanding and direct intervention, which is also invaluable. However, my primary drive is towards systemic change and organizational leadership, making the MPA a more direct alignment with my ambition to create large-scale, impactful programs that truly champion second chances and disrupt cycles of recidivism.
I believe that the combination of my lived experience, practical professional work, and the advanced knowledge gained from a graduate program will uniquely position me to bridge the gap between policy and practice. I am not just seeking a degree; I am seeking the tools to translate my purpose into tangible, transformative action for countless individuals and families.- Outside the classroom
