Goals and interests
- Career goal
My name is Birendra Das Biswas and I have a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calcutta, India and have been working in the industry for more than 25 years. After doing some thinking and research and looking into my future career goals as well as what I intend to achieve, I have decided to pursue my education goals further and complete my executive MBA. I was looking for a program which provides a flexible course schedule to maintain my full-time work, my personal life along with a course orientation as per my liking. Thereafter, I found that the eMBA offered by TSU could be a good fit for me.
My professional experience consists of many folds: it began with process design engineer, then process design supervisor, production optimization engineer and finally process manager for projects. Responsibility varied from execution of revamp projects to green field projects, managing cost, safety, quality and schedule. I have executed advisory role of PMC (project management & control) for complex refinery project of Colombia fulfilling my responsibilities of checking technical integrity, value engineering, and decision on material, quality and safety. A cost savings of 30 million dollars have been achieved for a billion dollar refinery project and I am confident of where and how we can get a value from bottom of barrel. Now, the face of energy has been changed due to massive production of shale oil and gas. For the last 4 years I have been involved in Cameron(CLNG) in Louisiana and Sempra LNG in Port Arthur. The executive MBA program with ENERGY FINANCE FOCUS is a key step providing me confidence to achieve my future goals.
I started my career as a Management Trainee in New Delhi. A 36 month schedule for completion of process design, engineering, construction and commissioning of a Cat Cracker was the first achievement in my engineering career and a good example of team work. My subsequent experience of overseas assignment in Libya, and in the Middle East will provide significant contribution to other program participants about doing business in the Arab World. Next I moved to Canada and worked in the Imperial Oil refinery in Edmonton where I did a revamp of Cat Cracker. This project of capturing valuable product was having a payback period of less than a year. The courses that I have completed so far with good grades(straight A and A+) are Energy Finance, Energy Trading, Energy Financial Valuation and Modeling. These will be useful for my future career path as I am working towards becoming an energy finace expert.
Life never goes as smooth as we wish. The BA Energy (Bridge American Energy) upgrader project was a scale up project from pilot plant to convert Canadian Oil Sand to Synthetic Crude for export to the US market. The project was capped during recession in 2008 due to market vulnerability after spending 400 million dollars in capital equipment and site activity. My lesson from this is to go for a moderate investment for scale up before full scale plant size to gain confidence in technology while reducing risk in capital investment.
In conclusion I am a dedicated, ethical, and goal oriented team player and leader. I am comfortable working and sharing my views in multicultural and multidisciplinary groups. Failure often results from good intentions and admirable qualities such as initiative, leadership, and risk taking. Ultimate success comes from failure and learning.
- Graduate school interests
Every individual is having a desire to establish a good career and meet hierarchy in career goal. Understanding of detailed technology plus profound business and group skills, which is a rare combination and is certainly true for me, is one of my most important and convincing reasons to pursue an executive MBA. I want to be where the action and the challenges are. The knowledge I will gain from completing an executive MBA should help facilitate a career change and achieve my goal.
- Outside the classroom
Interested in socializing, organizing and performing community events. Organizing engineers’ association social events such as picnics and indoor gathering. Other hobbies include soccer, hiking and traveling.
