About

I grew up with my lovely grandparents in Alavanyo, Ghana, a community with limited resources. This community has taught me never to take any opportunity I have in life for granted. Also, the spirit of perseverance, love and respect for all that was planted in me by my grandparents is still with me. I was enrolled at the Ghana school of Law prior to coming to the United States in 2014, where I intend to continue my law education, I now found myself on the path of Health Care. While volunteering as a Community Health Advocate in Manhattan, I discovered that my true passion is helping people in need of healthcare services. This ‘accidental discovery’ redirected my career vision to Nursing.

After earning my associate degree at Borough of Manhattan Community College, I will transfer to a four year college to work on my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. It is my desire to serve not only as a Registered Nurse here in the U.S, but also work in collaboration with World Health Organization to pay service to developing countries in Africa. It is my dream to one day obtain my master’s and then my PhD in nursing anesthetists.

I Currently volunteer 8 hours on the helpline to assist an average of 20 every week. I assist people understand and enroll in health plans; I also help people negotiate medical bills with their providers by mailing them templates to guide them in the negotiation letter writing. Under the permission of clients, I conference clients call with their insurance company and advocate on client's behalf to settle misunderstanding.
So far I saved three clients from paying about $2,500 surprise medical bills; I’ve also helped about 20 people found health coverage; and many people understand their coverage. I enjoy serving as a Community Health Advocate because it would help me serve the future needs of my community as an aspiring nurse. since I’m acquiring knowledge about client’s rights and opportunities available for them I would be able to educate my patients later. It is also helping me develop customer service skills that I need in my every life.

As a member of the Sisterhood Society of BMCC, I go for club meetings 2 hours per week. I participate in many activities including jewelry making for donation to the homeless shelter in Manhattan. Also, during events organized by the Women's Resource Center like the women history month, I share flyers to inform students about the various event dates and themes. Under the Sisterhood Society Club is a peer mentoring program of which I am a mentee because I’m a freshman. I meet with my mentor 1 hour every week and we discuss how we are coping with college. This club is stirring up my leadership my leadership skills since it brings professional leadership development personnel’s through it’s various workshops.
