About

My name is **Derrick Lewis Sr.**, and I’m a passionate music educator, band director, and community advocate with nearly 20 years of experience teaching instrumental music to students from middle school to college. I currently serve as the Director of Marching Bands at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee, where I lead the *Majestic Sounds of the South Marching Band* and am focused on rebuilding and expanding the music program at the city’s only HBCU.

My journey in music began as a personal outlet and quickly grew into a calling. Over the years, I’ve taught in both public and charter school settings, where I developed successful 6–12 grade band programs, integrated music theory and history into my instruction, and helped students grow from beginners into well-rounded performers ready for college and beyond.

I'm also the founder and CEO of **Inner-City Arts Academy (ICAA Inc.)**, a nonprofit organization committed to empowering youth through the performing arts. Through this work, I’ve had the opportunity to provide after-school programming, mentorship, and life skills to young people in underserved communities.

Throughout my career, I’ve built strong relationships with companies like Amro, Jupiter, and Yamaha; hosted community events like Battle of the Bands, and advocated for arts programs at every level. I’m proud to help shape the next generation of musicians and leaders—both on the field and in the classroom

Goals and interests

Career goal

My intended career path is to continue growing as a leader in music education and arts administration by building sustainable, high-quality music programs at both the collegiate and community levels. I’m committed to expanding my impact as a college band director while also growing my nonprofit, Inner-City Arts Academy, into a regional hub for performing arts education. I’m currently pursuing a doctoral degree to further strengthen my expertise, open doors for academic leadership, and deepen my influence on music education policy and practice. Long-term, I envision launching a fine arts-focused charter school that integrates rigorous academics, music, and technology to serve and uplift underserved communities. My journey is rooted in teaching, leadership, scholarship, and innovation with a mission to transform lives through music.
