About
I work as an elementary science and STEAM teacher at a private school in the city. Our school teaches K-6th graders in the elementary school, which is different than most that teach K-5. STEAM is a new program at our school and part of my job is to write curriculum and start this program alongside my colleague in Junior High and High School that is teaching STEAM (via robotics, engineering, and other creative ways). Our school is pretty out of the box and funky. We don't give grades or turn in lesson plans, which frees up teachers to really get a lot of meaningful work done. Our contracts are year-to-year, so we are very motivated to work our hardest without being micromanaged. My doctoral studies are focused on writing a research-based curriculum that is meaningful, engaging and fun for my students. STEAM & STEM are growing around the country and the effort to bring a well-done curriculum is needed at this time.
My educational background includes a B.S. in Written Communications & Political Science, M.A. in English & British Literature, M.A.T. in Education with certifications PK-12 ESOL, PK-5 elementary education and 6-12 English Education. I've taught preschool, high school, AmeriCorps Middle School Refugee education, 4th grade and now Science and STEAM for elementary students. This is my 13th year teaching and it seems like I just started. I like teaching all the subjects and trying new things. I am always studying and learning new ways to teach to make learning fun! I usually wear a toolbelt at work and it is filled with bandaids, sharpies, post-its, a hammer, and other random objects. It makes me so happy to know that I smile that big when I talk about how much I love teaching and learning.
