About

I am a first-year Bachelor of biomedicine student at La Trobe University. I am studying hard to graduate with the highest grade and go to medical school. I was able to obtain a WAM of 84 and grades A in all 4 of my semester-one subjects. I am studying biomedicine as it is a pathway into my desired health professional career as a trauma surgeon. From my own experience, I have profoundly understood the importance of having knowledge and ability to save the sick that has made my long term career ambitions. Therefore, I do my best to go to medical school and become a trauma surgeon in my long-term career.

side note: The university I am enrolled in Australia gives grades in WAM ( out of 100). I have used a university calculator to calculate my GPA out of 4.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I intend to graduate with high grades and continue my studies at Melbourne Medical School, striving to become a trauma surgeon. I did not always want to become a surgeon and initially wanted to live a quiet life as a science teacher. However, during my senior year of high school, my mother suddenly experienced intense internal pain, and it was all very horrifying to witness without being able to do anything to ease the pain. Feeling a sense of relief and peace once the doctors have attended to her at the hospital was a very life-changing and eye-opening moment in life for me. I realised the importance of having the ability to help someone in pain. It also made me feel shame that I did not intend to use my potential in a way that is beneficial to others and at the same time satisfactory to me. I decided then that I wanted to have the knowledge and power to help a sick get better and take away their pain. Hence my short-term goal is to achieve a high grade and to attend Melbourne Medical School, and my ultimate goal in life is to become a trauma surgeon to be a resemblance of hope and relief for suffering patients and their loved ones.

Graduate school interests

I am studying biomedicine as it is a pathway into my desired health professional career as a trauma surgeon. I intend to work as a trauma surgeon in the emergency section of the hospital, and later when given the opportunity, volunteer and go on missionaries to poorer and war-ridden countries.

Outside the classroom

In my spare time, I enjoy painting the sceneries around me, and I love learning a variety of different dances such as Kpop and belly dancing, which I believe were gifted to me through my mother! Although I love most sports, my two favourites are volleyball and basketball, which had induced me to join my high school's girls' basketball team. Most people's first impression of me is a calm and quiet person; however, I enjoy and have been part of my debate and leadership from grades 9 to 11. Given the opportunity, I would love to become an active member of my university's debate club; however, I have decided to broaden my interests and am looking forward to challenging myself in other areas. My interest in playing musical instruments motivated me to partake in our school's musical program, where I learned drums and became a regular member of my school's music band; hence playing the drums is another hobby I enjoy during stressful days. Currently, I have found an interest in learning languages, such as the Sign language, and continue my studies on the Korean language.

Volunteering

  • While in grade 10, I had the chance to volunteer at The Age Library for a continuance of one month, during which I learnt the basics of organising and the placement of books. Being a witness of other's hard work towards their studies and work, was very inspiring and motivational, which had also influenced me to strive for success at my studies. This has made me aware of the things that I did not consider as necessary before, such as the power of willingness over talent. Being more on the side of competitiveness myself, I was determined to give my all in my education and personal life.

  • I was fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to volunteer at Vinnies during the completion of my grade 10. For two months, I would assist in the organisation of the materials and help the costumers in a respectful and friendly manner. During this time, I was both grateful and satisfied with my choices of being of help to Vinnies charity organisation. I was grateful that through this opportunity, I could thank the charity for helping my family when we experienced hardship during our first months in Australia. I was hoping that this way, I could also provide help to other asylum seekers and refugees like myself.

  • Volunteering as a student from my high school, I enjoyed helping out with the cleaning and face painting in our community festivals. During this time, I genuinely enjoyed myself as painting is a hobby of mine, and seeing so much colour and smiles was a joy! I was content with myself that I was able to give back to the community that had accepted me and my family.
