Goals and interests
- Career goal
Throughout high school I have obtained a passion for biology and chemistry. While researching careers paths surrounding these topics I came across undergraduate degrees in Biomedicine and Infection/Immunology. I have come to the conclusion that my chosen field of interest would involve medical research surrounding diseases and treatments for them. My desire is that one day the research I complete will be beneficial in treating infections/diseases that many in the world struggle. My plan is not only to complete research in such fields, but I would like to eventually complete a doctorate degree and teach at a university. Teaching would allow me to educate others about this field, but also show the importance of innovative research and how it benefits our world. Innovation is critical to medical research as, not only will it lead to new discoveries about treatment, it can also lead to significant improvement of pre-existing methods. This is valuable to me, as my goal will always be to improve the treatment for the patients that need them; for not only survival, but quality of life. I have always had an interest in researching diabetes or cancer as both have long term history within my family. I believe this personal connection allows me to significantly apply myself. I always try my best and put in the maximum effort to complete all my work. By the end of this final year in high school, I will have been on the Honours list each year. I believe this, as well as my personal connections, will lead me to be a very hard working researcher. With this persistence and perseverance I will be able to reach many, improving and saving lives.
- Graduate school interests
I have always been interested in pursuing post-secondary education, but up until high school I was unsure of my interests. Throughout my high school studies I have taken a specific liking to biology, chemistry, and the human body. This interest has now grown into a passion, one specifically surrounding the human body, diseases and possible treatments. This is why I have chosen to pursue immunology and infectious diseases, hoping that one day I will not only complete my own research in this field but also teach others about it as well. This would mean completing a Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate degree to reach all my goals. Achieving such an education will allow me to do research in areas that truly matter to me, and hopefully have a large impact on the world. I have always had an interest in studying cancer and diabetes as both run in my family. Being able to further the treatments for these diseases would be a life changing opportunity.

Volunteering
-
Over the past 3 years I have been involved with numerous school clubs that benefit not only my high school, but also the surrounding community (Bowness, Calgary). I currently have a larger role in the Student's Union at my highschool, committing 4 hours weekly. I took the lead on fundraising in which the money collected went towards our school's “Jacket Racket” event. We collected jackets and other winter clothing items and donated them to families in need within our community. I also participate in my school yearbook club, committing around 3 hours weekly. As a senior I believe it is an amazing opportunity to have a say in the memories that are put into the yearbook. Being involved in this process, especially my year of graduation, is amazing as it truly feels like I'll leave a lasting impact with my peers.
