About
A Dreamer from China
I am majoring in Theatre BA. I grow up and studied in a church community homeschooling group in China, and many of our teachers are also teaching in universities. During homeschooling years, we have many debates and writings. I attended the John Locke Institute Global Essays Competition for high school students and won a merit prize. I passed the Grade 10 piano exam for the Chinese Musicians’ Association. I had taken vocal lessons. I performed in a fan group musical Elisabeth, and in it I acted as Queen Sophie.
I chose theatre major because of pure interest. However, rather than saying I haven't studied theatre before college, I'd say I never had the opportunity to learn it in those years. Since China, unlike western countries, doesn’t have many resources in learning arts. I want to learn something brand new that also fits my interest when I enter a completely different community in America. Thankfully, my piano skill, vocal lessons that I’ve taken, and the performance experience in the musical fan group, all these are helpful for moving towards my goals in musical and theatre. In the long run, there are many things about musical and theater can do in China, such as theatre education for students, building communities for young musical and theatre lovers.
While I’m currently enjoying my theatre courses, I am actually also passionate for writing and considering choosing writing as my goal. I have a good education in debates and writings, and I have experience in global essay competition, and I also have training in logic and critical thinking. All these give me courage for writing. Maybe the most important, I have friends who also love writing. We enjoy reading each other's writings. Life like a box of chocolate, you never know what you are going to get. Whatever there will be ahead, I won’t give up the dream of becoming a writer.
