About

My name is Felicia Kessler and I am a nontraditional student, a mother of two, and a full-time student. After nearly a decade away from school, I made the decision to return to college not just for myself but, for my family, my future, and the example I want to set for my children. I’ve learned that no matter how hard the path may be, it’s never too late to rise, to rebuild, and to thrive.

At my previous college, I committed fully to academic excellence and personal growth. I maintained a strong GPA while navigating the challenges of parenthood. But I haven’t stopped at the classroom. I worked hard to be an active, visible part of my college community. I am a Phi Theta Kappa Alumna and have served as my chapter's Vice President of Service and Public Relations Officer. I’ve helped create connections, promote student involvement, and amplify the voices of my peers. Through PTK I’ve found the courage to lead and the confidence to speak up for others. I am currently the Outlying District Officer for my Phi Theta Kappa region.

I’m a TRIO Alumna. TRIO is a program that has not only supported me but, inspired me to support others in return. Whether I’m mentoring students, organizing events, or simply encouraging someone to keep going, I lead with empathy and heart. I believe in lifting as I climb.

Education has changed my life. It’s given me a voice, a purpose, and a future. Scholarships allow students like me to keep dreaming and achieving even when the odds are stacked high. I don’t take that lightly. I am committed to making the most of every opportunity and continuing to strive for excellence in everything I do.

Goals and interests

Graduate school interests

I transfered to a four-year university to earn my bachelor’s degree. Looking ahead, I plan to continue my education by earning a master’s degree Graduate school will allow me to deepen my expertise, expand my teaching and leadership skills, and prepare for advanced roles.

Outside the classroom

In my free time, I enjoy a variety of activities that allow me to express myself and stay connected to my values. Singing is one of my greatest passions. It brings me joy and has given me opportunities to share my voice in meaningful ways, including performing the National Anthem in the Washington State House Chamber. I also love creative writing, public speaking, and reading, all of which help me reflect on my experiences and connect with others through storytelling.

Spending time with my family, especially my children, is one of the most important parts of my life. I love playing with them, cheering them on at their sporting events, and making memories together. We enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, camping, fishing, swimming, and gardening. I also enjoy riding dirt bikes and playing sports myself, especially tennis, which helps me stay active and energized.

Giving back is also important to me. I regularly volunteer at my college by helping organize and support Phi Theta Kappa events, and I volunteer as a trail rebuilder, working on environmental restoration projects in natural areas. Whether I’m serving others, enjoying the outdoors, or spending time with my family, I try to live with purpose, gratitude, and heart.

Experience

  • caregiver

Provided in-home care and emotional support for my father, multiple clients, and individuals in hospice care. Responsibilities included assisting with daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, medication management, meal preparation, transportation, and companionship. In hospice settings, I offered comfort-focused care, supporting both clients and their families through end-of-life transitions with empathy, patience, and respect. This role required strong emotional resilience, clear communication, and a deep commitment to preserving dignity and quality of life.

Volunteering

  • Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year colleges, focused on academic excellence, leadership, service, and scholarship. I serve as the Vice President of Public Relations and the Service Officer for my chapter. As Vice President of Public Relations, I help promote events, share our chapter’s accomplishments, and encourage student engagement. As Service Officer, I help plan and carry out community service projects. I also help organize our annual Induction ceremonies, making sure new members feel welcomed and celebrated. Additionally, I volunteer at our Phi Theta Kappa table during Club Day, where I connect with students and share how Phi Theta Kappa can support their academic and leadership goals. Being part of Phi Theta Kappa has helped me grow as a leader and inspired me to give back to my campus and community.

  • Trail rebuilding is the process of restoring and maintaining hiking and outdoor trails to ensure they remain safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable. It often involves clearing debris, repairing erosion damage, building support structures like retaining walls or steps, and rerouting trails to protect natural habitats. For me, trail rebuilding is more than physical labor. It is a way to give back to the land, preserve nature for future generations, and promote outdoor access for all. It teaches teamwork, patience, and a deep respect for the environment. Volunteering as a trail rebuilder connects me to something greater than myself and reminds me of the value of quiet, hands-on service.
