About
My name is Heather Whitmire. I am a first generation college student attending graduate school. I have worked as a dental hygienist for the last 13 years. My career in dentistry has allowed me the opportunity to help patients achieve optimal oral health. I have enjoyed volunteering my skills in underserved communities that do not have access to care. As a hygienist, my scope of practice is limited in that I must work under a dentist to provide my services. In 2018, I decided I wanted to become a doctor of dental surgery in order to reach more people in need. I recently finished my first year of dental school at the University of Texas School of Dentistry in Houston and continue to work and volunteer in my spare time. My time spent helping patients is what keeps me energized to continue on my journey.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
I am working on becoming a doctor of dental surgery so I can continue to help patients with their oral health needs, which also helps improve their overall health.
- Graduate school interests
I am really interested in learning more about forensic dentistry while in dental school. I would love to be able to assist in criminal cases, or mass disasters, to help identify deceased individuals. Another area of interest is epigenetic orthodontics. Epigenetic orthodontics uses a persons natural genes to correct teeth and bone structures using biomimetic appliances.
- Outside the classroom
My hobbies include playing sports such as basketball, softball, bowling and billiards. I have a love for plants and gardening. There is something therapeutic about getting my hands in the soil. I also enjoy traveling to Canada, Mexico, France, and Japan, with many more on my bucket list.
