About

I am a 49 year old returning student, husband, and father to 3 daughters ages 16, 8 and 6. I will be the first in my family to achieve a degree of higher education. My guiding principals in life are Respect, Responsibility and Reality. The meaning behind these principals are Respect yourself enough to take Responsibility for creating your Reality. I have overcome numerous challenges in my life, most notably substance abuse and alcoholism. I made a change in my life in 2011, and I am proud to have achieved 10 years of sobriety. I am a humble and grateful person that takes nothing for granted. I currently work 2 full time jobs to support my family and pay out of pocket for my education.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I have 6 years of experience working with at risk youth in the San Francisco, California and Houston, Texas areas. I currently work as a Youth Engagement Specialist at Covenant House Texas where I guide and counsel homeless youth ages 18-24. Also, for the past 3 years I have worked as a Long Term Special Education guest teacher at North Shore Senior High School. My role here in the PASS program (Positive Approach to Student Success) is to monitor, motivate, guide and redirect 11th and 12th grade Special Education students who struggle with learning and emotional disabilities. I teach a social skills class 4 times a week where I focus on social-emotional learning. My intended job path upon graduation is to attend Texas Teachers alternative certification program and become a certified special education teacher. I also aspire to work part time as a case manager at Covenant House.

Graduate school interests

I am interested in attending Grad School after I receive my teacher certification. My planned educational path in Grad School would be in Social Work.

Outside the classroom

I travel extensively with my family. I believe in taking my daughters on International trips to new destinations regularly. I love exposing them to new cultures and new experiences, and showing them how big and interesting the world is, and to be grateful for the things they have. My favorite saying for them is "A mind expanded by experience never returns to its original size".
