Jane Kung

I am currently a senior majoring in Social Work at Delaware State University (DSU). I will be graduating this spring, May 13, 2017 and have applied for an advanced master of social work program.
For a long time I didn’t know what I wanted to study. I went into nursing because I found it very interesting and fun, but realized it was mainly because I knew I could be assured a well-paying job. Today, I strongly believe nursing wasn’t what I was called to do. As the years progressed, my relationship with my husband worsened; this eventually led to our divorce that I have been struggling with. Despite my difficult past, I am determined to live a meaningful life. Through my hardships, my desire to help others living in difficult situations began to grow stronger. By improving my knowledge of health services, I hope to serve my community while using talents of communication/understanding others.
Over the past few years, I had been a part of internship programs, senior activity center at the Cheer Inc. and the student affairs department in Delaware Technical Community College (DTCC) and also volunteer at the Soup Kitchen while working with the homeless. I also stay very involved with church activities and enjoy being able to balance my schedule in efficient ways. I’m thankful to say that I have also studied abroad in Holland which has broader my view of the amazing world we live in. While in undergraduate in the DTCC through DSU has been a great learning experience in many ways and I’m once again reminded of the great privileges I have come across through the campus and the wonderful people I have met.
The elderly community is a growing population. In the future, I am very interested in their well-being and helping them become more comfortable with their fate of death. I want to create a program designed to comfort the elderly physically, mentally, and spiritually. I wish for this program to help elderly people find deeper purpose of their life.
Through the many things I have learned as an undergrad and the ongoing support, I look forward to the years ahead and the impact I hope to have in making a positive difference in my community.
