About

I am majoring in psychology and anthropology. My career goal is to work as a child life specialist. In hospitals, before and after surgeries with children, child life specialists perform an essential skill, to help the child understand and endure their situation.

My academic program has a focus first on psychology. Every psychology class I have taken has been a worthwhile experience. Last semester, I took BioPsy and received a B. My previous psychology classes were A's. BioPsy has a focus that is strongly the anatomy of the brain. To understand how the brain functions, also helps me to understand the reasons behind many conditions. I will be completing the 2nd half of BioPsy this coming semester. I will also begin a focus on anthropology with a class in that area as well.

There is a great need for child life specialists, especially in many of the northwest children's hospitals. I would like to focus my skills in that direction.

Goals and interests

Career goal

As a child I struggled through several open heart surgeries due to a congenital heart condition. I learned to continue through adversity by holding on to my dreams. If it seemed that something might be beyond what could be achieved, I simply took a smaller step towards that goal and then added another piece later. This perspective allowed me a large view of the world, a positive tendency to success. My doctors felt my life would be short but I fooled them through continuing to strive. It took a decisive view of variables like taking my many medications, exercise, a proper diet, etc. I made it through and became an adult with experiences that tried me but also strengthened me. I wish to share my bit of endurance as a child life specialist in a hospital. Endurance is something that can be learned but first must be taught.

Graduate school interests

The fall of 2016, I went with other WSU student to visit Gonzaga University's graduate psychology department. I am interested in immediately pursuing my Master's Degree upon receiving my Bachelor's Degree.

Outside the classroom

I enjoy the outdoors for many reasons. I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, camping, fishing etc. I enjoy traveling to various outdoor destinations. I have a congenital heart condition that has required me to exercise regularly. My doctor got me interested in rock climbing. It requires deep breathing that has helped improved my oxygen saturation. I now teach rock climbing to adults and especially children at a local exercise club in my hometown. I also enjoy photography of travel destinations.
