Volunteering

  • Community Habiliation Volunteer In the role of Community Habilitation Assistant within a private initiative, I provided support to autistic children transitioning to independent living. Central to this role was facilitating real-life experiences to help these young individuals acquire essential life skills. I organized and guided outings to local restaurants, teaching them how to interpret menus, order food, and engage in appropriate social conduct in public settings. Additionally, I led activities to develop daily living skills such as hygiene practices, laundry tasks, and community navigation. Emphasizing personal choice, I supported the children in making decisions about leisure activities, from visiting libraries to dining out, always prioritizing their autonomy while providing the necessary guidance. My approach was tailored to those requiring moderate support, ensuring safety protocols like handwashing and mask-wearing were understood and followed, particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through playing board games and cooperative tasks, I also fostered social interaction and turn-taking—skills vital for their integration into society.

  • Volunteer Peer Mentor - As a Peer Mentor for the Liberty Partnerships Program under NYSED, I have taken on a multifaceted role that has allowed me to make a profound impact on the lives of at-risk high school students. My commitment was exemplified in my work with three dedicated young men, providing them with academic guidance, goal-setting tools, and consistent support. Beyond group mentoring, I extended my efforts to individual tutoring, particularly in assisting Yolanda's daughter, which led to significant improvements in her academic performance.
