About

In 2009, my life changed; I become a single mother at 19 years old to a beautiful baby boy. My life growing up had its hardships. My biggest hardship was losing my mother the same year I welcomed my son. We were close and I looked up to her. She taught me that even when life knocks you down, you get back up and keep moving forward. I decided to go to college when my son was 2 years old. I would be the first in my family to graduate college. I wanted to show my son that education is important and to prove to myself I can keep moving forward after my hardships.
I started college in 2011, I was raising my son, working full time and just got engaged to a longtime friend. We will be celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary this year. He has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader throughout college. I decided that I wanted to be in health care because I looked up to my mother being a certified nursing assistant. She helped so many people and they adored her. When I was 16 my first job was a clinical assistant at a dental office. I loved watching the bonds that the Dental Hygienists had with their patients. I’m currently enrolled in the dental hygiene program. I chose this path because I want to help people feel good about themselves and educate them on their oral health. I want to become that Dental Hygienist that creates those special bonds and gives good quality care to my patients.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My goal after graduating dental hygiene school and receiving my license is to continue my education. I want to be able to master my skills and continue to learn new skills. My education will allow me to educate my patients on their oral health and how it connects to their overall health. My compassion and life experiences will allow me to connect with my patients. My goal is to build a bond with my patients and help them reach their oral health goals. My education has showed me being a dental hygienist isn't just cleaning teeth. It has taught me to individualize care for every patient, to be a good communicator, to self-evaluate, be a motivator, and be a lifelong learner. My drive will keep pushing to the next step and that is to go back to school to get my bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. It's important to grow and learn especially in healthcare, because evidence-based research changes every day.

Outside the classroom

I love to workout and do kickboxing. I was an amateur kicking boxing fighter for 5 years won 3 internationals belts and one state belt. It was a great experience with traveling and meeting new people. I do not amateur fight anymore but I still practice the sport to stay in shape. My biggest hobby is spending time with my husband, son, and our big extended family.
