About
Good morning/afternoon, my name is Lavinity Marx. I am 18 years old as of writing this, and am a junior at my local community college (Lake-Sumter State College). I grew up homeschooled from kindergarten to high school, and I could not be more grateful that I did, because I was able to learn who I was without the peer pressure I would’ve gotten in public school. Ever since I could absorb information, I’ve been fascinated by the natural world. And as soon as I learned about dinosaurs, and that they were animals who lived millions of years ago on an unrecognizable Earth, I immediately knew that I wanted to spend my life studying them. Currently, I’m set to graduate with my A.A. in May of 2024 and plan to start at my next school in the fall of the same year. Regardless of where life takes me, I’ll do everything in my power to stay on track; to achieve my dream, be on the front lines of the ever-changing field of paleontological research, and to not let down the wonderstruck little girl who thought this would all be so easy.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
When I graduate, I hope to work in a laboratory where I would study fossils and collaborate with other scientists to reconstruct these amazing creatures, mostly dinosaurs or other Mesozoic vertebrates. If I could, I would also love to be a college professor on the subject. However, immediately after I graduate I plan to live with my parents at least until I can pay my loans off with whatever income I can get, wether or not it ends up being the job I settle into.
- Graduate school interests
I have not looked at grad schools yet- I plan to figure that out while I get a B.S. I do know that they need to have a good program in paleontology, specifically concerning Mesozoic vertebrates, as I’ve stated before.
- Outside the classroom
One thing I occasionally occupy my time with is no-kill insect pinning and taxidermy (known in the community as “vulture culture”). My best friend and I love to go collecting together- I even made matching T-shirts for us with vulture skeletons on them. I also enjoy drawing, especially character design and sometimes short cartoon animations. Crafting is fun as well, I love making things out of whatever I can find around the house and working with acrylics. Recently, I’ve been making small painted figures out of foam. Lastly, hiking (or just being outside in general) is one of my all-time favorite things to do, but that’s not always possible under the blaring Florida sun. When I leave Florida, the diverse wildlife and unique ecosystems will be the only thing I’ll miss, and I feel like the call of a boat-tailed grackle will be forever nostalgic to me.

I sit in on meetings held by my city’s parks committee, and help gather ideas to improve our public areas. I still attend meetings with one of my parents whenever they happen, about every few weeks.

Took care of birds of prey to be rehabilitated or used as education animals. Cleaned enclosures, refilled water, rounded up quails at the end of the day. I no longer go because of time management and distance from my home.
