My name is Liza Afshar. I am currently a freshman at Virginia Commonwealth University, and my major is Biology. I was born on June 15, 2002, in Kabul, Afghanistan. My father worked with the US Embassy for fifteen years. In the sixteenth year, he got a golden award, which was the SIV “ Special Immigration Visa” for all of our family. I was eleven when we moved from Kabul to the United States in November 2013. I can speak more than five different languages, which are Persian, Pashto, English, Spanish, Hindi. Goals and interests
- Career goal
I choose to take EMT “Emergency Medical Technician” class besides my college classes to get one step closer to my future dream job. My biggest goal in life is to become a Cardiac Surgeon and open my own hospital one day. Many people are suffering from dangerous diseases around the world, but unfortunately, due to their financial problems, they can’t do anything about it. I would be more than happy to welcome those in need to my hospital and treat them for free.
As an EMT student, I do ride alongs with Life Care, and Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department as well as ER rotations in Mary Washington and Stafford Hospital. Throughout my ride alongs, I have learned and experienced a lot about Medical, Legal, and Ethical Issues, Airway Management, Artificial Ventilation, Oxygenation, Respiratory Cardiovascular, and Acute Diabetic Emergencies, Altered Mental Status, Stroke, Seizures and Syncope, Abdominal, Hematologic, Gynecologic, Genitourinary, Renal Emergencies, and Multisystem Trauma in the medical field. Working with actual EMTs is a great pleasure for me and saving someone's life is like a lifetime dream coming true. Sometimes during our emergency calls, we deal with patients that have a low chance of survival. Our patients trust us and we try our very best to save their lives. Death and dying are inherent parts of emergency medical care. You must care for the dying patient’s emotional needs, injuries, and illnesses. If the patient has suffered sudden death, you may also need to help the family or bystanders deal with the situation. It is likely that you will experience more stress in a short while than most people will experience in a lifetime. Some patients who are terminally ill will go through certain stages related to death and dying. Family members may go through the same stages but at different times. And I have learned and experienced how to be prepared to deal with these patients, their families, and their emotions.
- Graduate school interests
After completing my bachelor's degree, I would like to get accepted to a good medical school. After graduating from med school with a good GPA, I would like to become a Cardiac Surgeon. Honestly, I don't care about making more money, as long as I would be able to support my family and help needy people.
