About
I am Maela Princesse, currently pursuing an Associate’s degree in Chemistry at Edmonds Community College. My goal is to become a neurologist in my home country of Cameroon, where neurological diseases, particularly epilepsy, affect a significant portion of the population, yet there is a severe shortage of neurologists. I am preparing for medical school by excelling in my studies, maintaining a 4.0 GPA, and volunteering over 1,000 hours in health and community service. I’ve also earned scholarships such as the Hazel Miller Foundation and International Scholarship, which reflect my commitment to academic excellence.
Through personal experiences, including the loss of two brothers to epilepsy, I developed a deep interest in neurology. These experiences, combined with volunteering in hospital settings and as a tutor, have strengthened my resolve to improve healthcare in Cameroon. I aim to specialize in treating neurological diseases and train future neurologists. My academic achievements and community involvement are foundational to achieving this goal, and I am committed to continuing my education and service to others.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
My goal is to become a neurologist in my home country of Cameroon. Neurological diseases, particularly epilepsy and severe headaches, comprise 20% of hospital admissions in Cameroon. Despite the prevalence of these problems, there are only about 10 neurologists for a population of 29 million inhabitants. The WHO estimates that at least 2.5 medical staff per 1,000 people are needed to provide adequate coverage with primary care interventions. In Cameroon, this ratio is less than 0.01. I would like to apply my talent and hardwork to alleviate this problem. By excelling in my current program, I am preparing myself for the MCAT test, which is required to get into medical schools.
- Graduate school interests
I plan to apply to medical schools to pursue an MD program. Medical school is the next essential step in my journey to becoming a physician and addressing the severe shortage of neurologists in Cameroon. I am particularly interested in medical programs that offer a focus on tropical medicine, as they will provide me with the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to address the unique healthcare challenges in my region. For example, the University of Utah programs align with my goals of understanding and mitigating the effects of neurological diseases in tropical climates.
- Outside the classroom
Running cross country is one of my passions and has taught me valuable lessons in discipline, perseverance, and goal-setting. Training and in races have helped me build both physical endurance and mental resilience. The sport has also instilled in me a sense of teamwork and camaraderie, as I work together with my teammates to achieve collective success. Cross country running continues to be an important part of my life, allowing me to maintain balance and focus while pursuing my academic and professional goals
