About
As a young child, I had a passion for learning, however, somewhere between adolescence and a series of bad decisions; I became a high school dropout. I ended up entering my local community college after obtaining my GED and became a special education teacher. I always knew that my overcoming my shortcomings would be best put to use in helping at risk youth. Changing careers was not even on my radar until I had been an educator for over 18 years. I have the parents of my students who were in the medical field to thank for recognizing the abilities in me I had not thought I had. I went back to school in my 30’s and pursued a nursing career. When I look back on my 43 years on this Earth, I can definitely say I found my calling always in the pursuit of serving others.
According to recent data from the National Student Clearinghouse, Hispanic adults are less likely to hold college degrees (https://campaignforaction.org/resource/diversity-nursing-doctorate-graduates-raceethnicity/). Less than 1% of today’s nursing workforce has a doctoral or PhD (https://www.ncsbn.org/public-files/2021_NCSBN_Annual_Report.pdf). Having said all this, along the path to obtaining my DNP, I have often felt humbled to have colleagues and high school students I work with express the motivation my journey has imparted in their lives. When students enter my office and comment on the diplomas on my wall and ask if they are all mine, I often joke with them by telling them I am the Lord Farquad (Dreamwork’s “Shrek” movie character) of education…overcompensating for the mistakes of my youth. They find this quite comical, but I find I can get my point across to my young students on the importance of education at any age and despite any circumstance. I have found a merger of both my passions; teaching and nursing.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
It is my goal to elevate the profession of nursing simultaneously with the subspecialty of school nursing. COVID 19 brought worldwide attention to the importance of a school nurse’s role in safely reopening and maintaining safe schools. I would be the first school nurse in Miami Dade County having earned a DNP. With a DNP, I plan to advocate legislation for school nurses and children’s right to access to healthcare. With the skillsets I am learning, I plan to continue promoting higher education as a means to get our voices heard. As I have always served in a school if not as a special needs teacher, now a school nurse, education is always at the forefront of my mind.
This being said, school nurses, much like educators also share the fact that salaries do not often reflect the hard work put in. Although my husband is a professor and I am a school nurse, it is safe to say we are both are on educator salaries. It is also safe to say that while the city where I live in grows, so do the economic challenges, and the financial constraints on my family. My family had already been accustomed to living frugally as our youngest son has kidney disease causing him to have frequent hospitalizations and drug regiment changes. We always pray for the best but prepare for the worst. Just last year around May 2022 where he required 2 rounds of chemotherapy as he had one of the worst health related years. Throughout the year, I continued to rely on student loans as all of our money went to paying off hospital bills and making sure our bills were paid. My family has made a decision that education is important and as a family our motto is, “stay the course.” As I near the end of my academic endeavors and graduate in August 2023, I ask that you consider me as a recipient of a scholarship as this would literally translate into helping not just me, but my family. Thank you for your consideration.- Graduate school interests
