About

My name is Nocona Stevenson. I am a Native American filmmaker from the state of Arizona, enrolled with the Navajo tribe. I started out as an aspiring artist, having taking art classes since age 12 and even enrolling at Mesa Community College for their art program. After six years of studying the fine arts, I still felt as though I have no real goal in life. It wasn’t until I talked with some of my art professors that they noticed I usually include film into my pieces. That was the moment that I learned that my ideas and talent lie in the medium of filmmaking, and so, I graduated with my associates in fine arts and began my path of becoming a director.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I am a filmmaker with the intention of becoming a writer-director, bringing my stories and ideas onto the big screen. I plan on going out to California to pitch my scripts to studio producers and land the role of director for the scripts that I would have sold to them.

Graduate school interests

My goal for obtaining my Masters is to go to California and enroll into the American Film Institute. I attended a tour of the school back in 2019, along with UCLA and USC. The school’s emphasis on harnessing their student’s artistic talents and refining them impressed me, as well as the staff that hosted the tour. The singular focus on film education also appealed to me, as that assures me that I will be surrounded by like minded students and staff, as opposed to USC and UCLA, where I get the feeling that film is just another art program that doesn't need their full attention.

Outside the classroom

I have many hobbies, all of them in the artistic fields. There is my first love of drawing and painting that I still practice from time to time. I also discovered miniature painting, particularly that of Warhammer 40,000 and Dungeons & Dragons models, taking in the skills I learned from my art classes. I also like to read, with the Horus Heresy series, JRR Tolkien, and Harlan Ellison among the top of my favorite reads.

  • assistant manager

The AM position at Dollar Tree required me to maintain the store's cleanliness, address customer issues, damage out the broken/stolen merchandise, and I was usually tasked with closing the store. At that time, I would lock the doors, count the registers and safe, then complete the paperwork that is needed each and every day.

  • sales associate

I started working at Dollar Tree since 2019, at the entry level of sales associates where I was tasked with manning the cash register, stocking the shelves, and cleaning the store after closing hours. I was also tasked with answering customer questions and unloading the delivery truck.
