About
Growing up in the Hampton Roads area, basketball is more than a game to me. It is a way of life. Growing us as a varsity basketball player in Virginia Beach, I have learned that talent can open doors, but hard work, character, and consistency are what keep them open. I am Chase Johnson, a high school senior, a student-athlete with a 3.55 GPA. I have worked hard to balance being a student and an athlete while continuing to improve myself.
Being a basketball player has taught me lessons that extend far beyond the court. There have been times when I felt overlooked, but those moments have pushed me to work harder. Every practice, workout, and game has reminded me that I am responsible for my own growth. I cannot control who notices me, but I can control how prepared I am, how I treat people, and how much effort I give. My goal is not simply to be recognized as a basketball player. I want to be known as someone who never stopped improving. Basketball has taught me that I do not need everyone to believe in me as long as I continue believing in myself.
My family is one of the biggest reasons I work as hard as I do. My father was a professional basketball player overseas and played college basketball at Monmouth University. Today, he works as a real estate agent. Watching his journey has shown me life after basketball requires preparation, discipline, and the willingness to build something meaningful. My mother works for Social Security, and one of my biggest goals is to become successful enough to retire her earlier than she otherwise could. I want to give back to the people who have supported me and my opportunities possible.
My parents have also taught me that success is about more than what you accomplish for yourself. It is also about responsibility. Their example has encouraged me to take my education seriously and think about what I want my future to look like. A 3.55 GPA represents the effort I have put into balancing school and basketball, but it also reminds me that there is always room to improve. I want to enter college ready to learn, challenge myself, and continue to develop both academically and personally.
When I think about college, I am not only thinking about the kind of person I want to become after college. I want to graduate with more than a degree or basketball experience. I want to become a better man, who is dependable, disciplined, and willing to help others. I want to use what I learn to build a successful career, create opportunities for my family, and make my parents proud.
My basketball journey has taught me that being underrated does not define who I am or who I can become. It is simply part of my journey. The work I put in today will share the opportunities I have tomorrow. College will be a new chapter. I am ready to bring my work ethic, my family's values, and my determination to my college experience. I may be known as a basketball player in the Hampton Roads area, but I hope the people I meet in college come to know me for something greater; the person I am becoming and the impact I will make.
