About

I am a graduate student studying Communication & Rhetoric at Syracuse University. While I am a passionately involved student of rhetorical theory, my scholarship in that field is essentially selfish. I chose to pursue the study of rhetoric because of a curious, and deeply personal motivation to better understand my own acts of communication, as well as those of others. My motive here is that of achieved authenticity (if there is such a thing). Ralph Waldo Emerson said, in "The Poet," that "In love, in art, in avarice, in politics, in labor, in games, we study to utter our painful secret. The man is only half himself, the other half is his expression." Putting aside, temporarily, the sexist characterization of humanity as "man," Emerson's phrasing here summarizes the sort of inauthenticity that has inspired my study of rhetorical "expression." I am engaged, here, in an endless sisyphean battle for authenticity. That authenticity, I think, can only be achieved when our expression aligns with our subjectivity. Whether such authenticity is possible at all (doubtful) is beyond me, but I intend to pursue it nonetheless. Anyway, that's just my personal reason for studying rhetoric.

Goals and interests

Career goal

Rather than a "job" (something you do because you have to in order to satisfy some larger figure or in order to survive), I intend to have an "occupation" (something you do out of will; a calling that preoccupies a person). I hope to spend my time as a community builder--nurturing publics by helping to create spaces and means for artistic expression and dissemination of discourses about public life. After all, the more a public learns to express itself (and not just certain advantaged members of that public, but the public as a whole), the closer it may come to achieving that mythic state of being a "good society." These professional aspirations, I think, are only a civically minded and larger-scale version of my above personal motives for studying rhetoric--if a society can express itself authentically and align its actions and policies with its collective values and beliefs, then that society becomes harmonious and authentic. Such a utopian state of affairs is surely impossible to achieve. That said, we really should try anyway.

Considering my occupational goals, I will pursue employment in whatever spaces are best for achieving those goals. The academy, at least to start with, seems very promising. Then again, though, there are many paths that would suit my aspirations. Only time will tell which one I will take.
