About

I became serious about my career as a nurse in 1989 when I returned to college as a single mother of two young daughters. Determination mingled with support and assistance I was able to obtain my Associate Degree in Science of Nursing. I enjoyed the opportunity to work in many areas of nursing and in many regions of the country.

I was married in 1996 to a supportive husband. We had three more children while I continued to work as a nurse, primarily in the perioperative setting. In 2006 through 2011 I worked with my husband in his business as excavating contractors. I learned many skills, grew in self management, and became a stronger leader. Returning to nursing in 2012 I realized it was time to return to school as well.

Goals and interests

Career goal

Two years ago I accepted a job with the State of Texas working with intellectually and developmentally disabled people. I have found many challenges in this field. It is a period of pioneering new ideas and processes. My goal is to participate in developing methods to establish plans of care for long term for these individuals to be placed in the best setting to meet their needs. I am looking forward to working in this capacity for the next 15 to 20 years. Hopefully, I will be able to offer to my work new insight and method as I continue my education.

Graduate school interests

I began my study towards Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Texas at Arlington. As I have participated in courses online I immediately was able to apply newly acquired knowledge in my profession. I did take a hiatus due to my oldest daughter being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I was able to return to my work to obtain my BSN during 2016.

I am looking forward to completing my BSN and immediately embark on a Master Degree in Science of Nursing.

Outside the classroom

Currently my hobbies are school and work. I do several service projects each week in the community including visiting the elderly, assisting youth, and reading with young children.

I have enjoyed quilting, knitting, and other textile forms of art. Our famly does have a garden and enjoy a variety of farm animals. Cows are my favorite and we are currently having new calves born.
