About

My past has had many influences on my academic life and decisions. Growing up, I experienced an early death in the family. My father left seven children, two of whom are with special needs, and a wife. The oldest child at the time was sixteen and the youngest was six years old. Little did I know his death would forever shape my values, my work ethic, and my academic life. By the age of ten, I took responsibility for taking care of my siblings with special needs. Given this opportunity at a young age, I began to develop skills that I still use today: punctuality, alertness, creativity, leadership, as well as being respectful and responsible. Despite this time in my life, I was too young to realize that it's possible my future could revolve around people, including those with disabilities. Instead, after years of watching the late-night news with my mother, I was inspired to become a broadcast meteorologist. My family supported my decision, and I completed three years at my local community college before transferring out. It wasn't until that very last moment before leaving for Arizona State University that the Arts had a special place in my heart. You see, for me, the past has had such a huge impact on the person that I am today that in that moment of leaving my home where I built those skills, lived as if I was an adult at the age of ten, I couldn't abandon. I knew it was the right decision to stay where I was, unsure of what field of study I'd be going into. Thankfully, photography has helped direct me to the Arts. I am certain that I will use this field to help those around me, and industrial design could potentially be my calling. This is my story, and I'm proud of where it leads me to.

Goals and interests

Career goal

As a first-year art student, I will take any opportunity to explore many areas within or out of the industrial design program. My overall goal is to end up in a workplace where I can bring my creativity, my ideas, and my skills to the table to help improve the lives of others. Whether it's within a company or one of my own, I want to put the needs of others first.

Graduate school interests

Depending on which path I decide to take in design school, it is possible I will continue my academic life and graduate with my masters. Completing graduate school will give me an advantage and more opportunities within the Arts.

Outside the classroom

During my free time, I love to go outside to rollerblade, bike, play volleyball, or even to go on a walk. Other days, I enjoy water coloring, reading a book, or even photographing.

Experience

  • florist

I work as a florist at a Costco within my community. I get the store prepared before opening hours, as well as work second shifts to fill in and work on any bouquets that need reworks.

  • assistant

I worked as an assistant for those with special needs at M-NASR (Maine-Niles Associate of Special Recreation). I was assigned one-on-one with a child during after school programs, summer camp, and sometimes for weekend activities like bowling. I worked with kids on both ends of the spectrum. During work, I needed to create a safe and fun environment for these kids.

  • caregiver

I've been my autistic brother's caregiver since 2017. Not only do I get to meet my brother's needs, but it's all accessible from home. Some of the tasks I take responsibility for is making him food, helping him with ordering online, driving him, and keeping him company when needed.

I worked as a swimmers instructor for young children at Niles North High School in Illinois. This job was given to me by my high school gym teacher, as he knew I was on the diving team.
