About

Hi! My name is Seraphina Chong, and I'm from Singapore!
I am turning 19 in September 2022 and will be attending Gordon College, a university in Wenham, MA, this Fall! When working, I am hardworking and always striving to do my outmost best. Other than that, though, I would describe myself as bubbly, friendly, considerate, and caring. I love caring for babies and toddlers, running in the rain, and going on adventures with friends. I love to laugh, too! I am a devout Christian, so my goal is to please the Lord by using my gifts to serve His people.

Education

  • Gordon College

    Marine Biology

    2022 – 2026

Honors and awards

  • Member of La Société Honoraire de Français

Since 11th grade, I have been part of this French Honor's Society.

  • Part of the 13th National Percentile for Level 4 of Le Grand Concours

This is a national competition across America held by The American Association of Teachers of French. Essentially, I was competing against French learners of the same level across the U.S.A.

Goals and interests

Career goal

In the future, I hope to be a marine biologist and an educator for children and teens. Thus, in Gordon College, I plan to major in Biology with a concentration in marine biology and minor in French and Spanish.

Graduate school interests

Although I have never thought so far, it is possible that I will further my studies in marine biology, hoping to concentrate on mammalogy.

Outside the classroom

In my freetime, I love to write songs on the piano and guitar! I especially enjoy writing them in the different languages I know of! To date, I have created over 80 English songs, of which only about 20 are actually recorded. I have written a simple Japanese song, too, and about 4 French songs. I have uploaded some of these onto my YouTube Channel under "Seraphina Chong."
I also like writing musical-plays and have written 2 so far. The first play is composed of Five Acts and 3 accompanying songs. It spans a total of 72 pages. Set it Ancient Greece, it explores the role of woman in Ancient Athens and highlights the significance of loyalty and devotion in marriage. The second play is set in Medieval times and has about 170 pages and Ten Acts. It dives into the importance of chasing one’s dreams, the blessings of having a family, and the beauty of physical differences.
I also like to study in my free time to learn more about history and science, to practice my languages, and to pick up new skills! Sometime soon, for example, I hope to learn Swahili through YouTube.
Sports I enjoy include running, cycling, roller-blading, and ice-skating. I dance, too, and would either learn or create choreos with my best friend. Other than that, I love playing with my friend's 4-year old son, watching movies, and spending time with my family and loved ones :)

Volunteering

  • I lead a French Café for a total of 20 weeks in 12th grade. Every week, I prepared games for the café and exercises to help them with their pronounciation and speaking skills. I gave mini-cultural and history lessons also and introduced some French music. Towards the end of every semester, the members and I would work on a big project together and send it to the French teacher. Even though we were in different parts of the world, we successfully wrote a French song and a French Christmas play! The French song , “L’Adieu D’Une Martienne (Goodbye of the Martian),” captures a Martian’s sadness in returning home to Mars, as she struggles to breathe the air on Earth. On the other hand, the French Christmas play depicts the story of a rich boy, Louis, who hates Christmas, thinking he has everything in the world. With the help of a fairy from Père Noël (Santa), though, he discovers that he lacks compassion and so learns to love and care for others.

    The Potter's School

    Nov 2021 – May 2022

  • I am currently volunteering as a French tutor for my French teacher. I meet with students twice a week to go through the textbook, engage in French conversations, or work on their verb conjugations. To help with listening, we sometimes watch French cartoons like Miraculous Ladybug together or listen to French songs.

    The Potter's School

    Nov 2021 – May 2022

  • I helped babysit my Aunt's baby boy from 2017 to 2020. I would go to her house often and stay for about 1-3 days. I would play with the baby as my Aunt cooks lunch, help push him on a stroller as we walk through the grocery store, and take naps with him in the afternoon. Before his bedtime, I would watch over him as he drinks his milk and after that, we would engage in little baby-noise conversations!
