About

Hello! My name is Shelby Springer. I am working towards getting my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree at the University of Central Missouri. In addition to Nursing, I am also minoring in Psychology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I am currently a sophomore and I take my grades very seriously. I've maintained a 3.5 GPA, along with participating in several activities within University housing. First, I am an United Student Housing Association (USHA) representative. As an USHA representative, I attended Housing meetings and gather knowledge of that is happening within the campus residence halls. Then, I report back to my hall council to enlighten them of the information and discussions that took place within the USHA meeting. I spend on average two-three hours a week dedicated to University Housing and my executive team. Second, I am a 2015 Community Advisor. The job of a Community Advisor comes with great responsibility being I am in charge of college residence within my assigned hall. The Community Advisor job is the highest paying job within my university and comes with great, unbeatable benefits. Last but not least, I am an active member of National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). Being that NRHH membership is only granted to 1% of the residence living on campus, I take great pride in being involved in such a great organization. My NRHH membership not only grants me the rights to make dramatic decisions within the University of Central Missouri, but also allows me to experience college as a whole.
By taking advantage of the opportunities and events within my residence hall, my personal communication skills have shown through. I now have the understanding and confidence to spark a conversation with residents that live with and around me. I personally have a better understanding of diversity, and the idea that everyone comes from a different background. With the understanding that no two people are the same, I have found myself turning acquaintances into life-long friends. Thus far, I have taken advantage of every opportunity that has came my way.
My goal is to maintain my 3.5GPA while fulfilling my memberships and positions within the jobs and organizations I am involved in. I plan to volunteer at a local hospital in the near future to get a better understanding of my field and that jobs within. I am ecstatic about my accomplishments thus far and plan to achieve much more in my future. I have no doubt that I will graduate with a BSN degree come May 2018 and find my true position within the medical field.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I have many possible ideas for myself after I graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from University of Central Missouri. I am interested in being a Pediatric nurse and caring for children in all aspects of health care. I would prefer to work in a clinic or hospital setting, but I am also open to work within a school or home setting. In addition to Pediatrics, I am open to the thought of Oncology. Considering Cancer runs deep in my family, I would love to provide health care for Cancer patience at all stages and treatments of remission. Being that I love to help and understand women, I also lean towards the idea of being a Women's Health Nurse and applying my Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor. Helping women and making a difference in their lives would be a very rewarding job for me.
Although I have previously mentioned three possible job paths, my ultimate dream job would be a Traveling Nurse. I fall in love with the idea of traveling the world, typically choosing which are I would like to reside, while making a difference within the community and the lives of the people. Not only is a Traveling Nurse a high paying job, but I would also get to experience many different cities, ethnicity, and experiences.

Graduate school interests

I would love to attend Graduate School at the University of Kansas (KU). Not only is KU ranked within the top ten graduate programs among public universities, it also is home to a non profitable academic medical center which would allow me to receive hands on experience.

Outside the classroom

When I am not a full time student (summer), I enjoy during numerous things. I love to take pictures. I have multiple cameras and can get lost behind a lens any day of the week. I love to surround myself with positive friends; you can typically find us poolside with a Peace Tea in our hands. I love crafting and take a lot of pride in the few projects that I have done. I have painted numerous canvases and love to make small crafts to display in my college dorm. I also love to attend baseball games. Being that I am from Kansas City, the Royals are my absolute favorite baseball teams. I enjoy attending home games and being surrounded with the Kansas City atmosphere.
