About
Hi!
My name is Sun Oh, I'm a rising Sophomore in college transferring to Boston University. I graduated from Walter Johnson High school in 2022, and after taking a gap year, attended Montgomery College this past fall.
I was born in the states to a Korean American parents and have spent my entire life in Maryland. As a third generation Asian American, I've always felt rather estranged from my Korean heritage. Up until my senior year of high school, I had intended on going to art school. Although art has been a long time passion for me, having done it since preschool, during the pandemic, I got to see my older sister take some of her university courses online. Secretly sitting in on these her Asian history, literature, and art classes amazed me as it was the first time I'd truly been able to learn about my culture. After this, I decided to switch paths and reapply to schools as an East Asian Studies major, which is why I decided to take a gap year despite getting into several prestigious art schools. In my academic pursuits, I have and will continue to incorporate art in my history research. One of the ways I've been doing this has been exploring ancient Korean art, with a specific emphasis on sculpture and ceramics. This past year at Montgomery college, I not only researched Korean ceramics for my Korean Language class final project, but also created several pieces inspired by these techniques in my ceramics class. Learning to marry my life-long interests of art and my newfound appreciation of my Asian heritage has been my primary goal of my academic experience.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
With my interests in art and Asian studies, I plan to go into publishing. For the past few years, I've already been independently creating my own webcomics, and I plan to continue this after I graduate. I plan to use what I've learned about Asian history and culture in my undergraduate experience to inform the stories I write and share my heritage to the world. I think especially in this day in age amidst massive nation-wide book-bans, representation in media is more important than ever.
- Graduate school interests
I'm interested in applying for PHD programs after my college to possibly pursue a career as a professor of East Asian Studies.
- Outside the classroom
While a lot of my professional endeavors revolve around art, I still enjoy it as a hobby as well. My Webcomic is digital art so I like to switch up the pace and watercolor leisurely. I also enjoy ceramics, and take sculpture classes whenever possible!
I'm a relatively big reader, though it admittedly takes me a while to get through things because I'm a little dyslexic. One of my favorite genres is gothic literature. I recently finished "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte and absolutely adored it! For research projects during the school year, I ended up reading a lot of Asian history literature and it got me very interested in these books. I'm currently reading "Nanjung Ilgi," the translated war diary of the famous Korean admiral, Yi Sun-sin. I'd say I read traditional novels like these at least three times a week, however, my daily literary intake comes in the form of webcomics! According to my phone, I spend about an hour each day reading online comics.
Outside of this, I also love to play video games, though not the violent fighting or shooting ones. I enjoy farming simulators like Animal Crossing and creature-catching games like Pokemon. While I game, I usually listen to an audio book or a video essay.
I'm really interested in film as well, and like pretty much any and every movie. After a particularly interesting watch, I like to write an in-depth analysis of the film as if I'm a critic- though I don't post these reviews anywhere.
I like to play guitar as well, and have been playing for almost fiver years now. Even after taking a class this past year, I'm still truly terrible! It doesn't matter to me though, I just enjoy playing and learning something new!
When I feel like leaving the couch, as painful as it is, I like to go on long walks with my two dogs. There's a nature preserve right around my house that tons of beautiful and rare birds live in.
