About
For the last sixteen years, Suzanne Ensmann has held roles in the field of education ranging from instructor of secondary and post-secondary classes to Director of Program Effectiveness for Indian River State College’s Adult Education. Classes she has taught include Student Success, College Computing, and Technology in Education. By teaching and spearheading Adult Education’s e-Learning program, Suzanne has had the opportunity to directly engage students in their learning. Because Suzanne earned a Master’s Degree in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University while living in Florida, she knows first-hand how much work is involved in taking online classes. Suzanne’s teaching philosophy includes motivating students to want to learn instead of directing them to “power down” when they walk into a classroom. She believes that making use of students’ technology revitalizes learning and teaching, creating a fun environment and successful outcomes! Suzanne is actively involved in teaching educators how to embrace the new generation of technology, design real-world engaging lessons and incorporate gaming into education. She presents nationally as well.
iCivics envisioned by Justice O'Connor is “dedicated to reinvigorating civic learning through interactive and engaging learning” games. Suzanne recognizes the power in which technology plays in educating our rapidly changing world. This understanding synergized with her passion to make a difference in others’ lives makes the iCivics Teacher Council a clear fit for her continued efforts.

How does change occur when it comes to social injustices and crimes against
humanity? Historically, “Knowledge is power” (Bacon, 1597) is used to advance man
in ending inequalities based upon race, gender, religion, disability, and genetic origin.
Are there still injustices committed based upon age? This capstone
project/dissertation posits that there is evidence-reflecting inequalities of justice
afforded to children. If rights for children should be considered amongst those
protected can gaming advocacy educate in order to perpetuate change?
Given the presumption that all humans are equal, amendments protecting classes of
several people formerly discriminated against aligns with the American Constitution
upholding equality for all citizens. Prior to legislative enactments, history
demonstrates inconsistencies afforded to these aforementioned classes. An example
of this is reflected by the determinant leading up to the Civil War. Slavery was still
legal based upon race in the southern states but not in the northern states. In fact, not
only did perceptions and laws vary from state to state regarding race, but also based
upon gender, religion and disabilities until the Amendments to the Constitution
mandated equality for all, regardless of location of residence. This study will
examine the potential of using Digital Game Based Learning (DGBL) to advocate for
equality to be afforded to all children also regardless of location of residence.
My grad school focus has been upon creating a game designed with the goal to teach and impact social change,
such as: iCivics, Games4Change, or European Children’s Rights Games was designed
- Outside the classroom
Suzanne prioritizes family, faith, and actively participating in life! When Suzanne is not working, her focus is on: her two sons, staying fit from running marathons to triathlons, and "paying it forward" in her community. Because Suzanne is a survivor of domestic abuse and has witnessed emotional abuse of children, she is also passionate about empowering children to obtain equal rights as citizens. A desire to help others coupled with an appreciation for the value of a global education has led her to serve abroad with endeavors such as serving the poor in Haiti.
