About

A communications specialist who learned the trade in a newspaper newsroom, I now use those skills in such diverse fields as non-profit development, labor relations, public relations and most recently as a novelist.

Working as Field Director in my day job, means just that, getting into the field. Meetings with teachers, laborers, nurses, hotel workers, it doesn't matter, I'm there to listen and help facilitate planning and implement strategy.

In recent years to build a brand and promote my book, 9-11 Avenged, I've had to learn how to use social media and gained followings on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other platforms to tease potential readers and drive traffic to the book's website, 9-11avenged.com is a great way to sell books. These skills have also been extremely helpful in organizing at my day job and I'm constantly willing to integrate new technologies and methods in all aspects of both parts of my life to make my life and work easier, even if it's just simple time management.

While at the newspaper I read news, features and sports and while working in sports was part of a team that introduced a new web-based platform that increased online traffic by 400 percent in a year.

Giving back is also important to me and I helped found two separate non-profit organizations, the Michael J. Gonsalves Scholarship Fund at Rhode Island College, serving as co-chairman of the scholarship that became the fastest growing endowment in school history.

Goals and interests

Career goal

My job path was already well-established, I earned my master's degree in mid-life after a shock in the job market and industry in which I worked. It meant a change from writing and editing in the field of journalism to following my true passion and making sure that everyone in the workplace is treated fairly, and the best way to do that was to go back to school and gain a master's degree in human resources.

Graduate school interests

I've already finished with my master's and don't intend on pursuing a PhD.

Outside the classroom

Writing is more than just a hobby, I've written and self-published a full-length spy novel, "9-11 Avenged," that can be found and purchased on Amazon.com. I've also written for, performed onstage and produced the Providence Newspaper Guild Follies for the past dozen years. For those unfamiliar with the show, it takes anyone or any newsworthy situation over the past year and pokes fun at them/it and draws most of the top politicians. media members, as well as business and labor leaders to the 1200 member crowd. So yes, comedy is in my blood.

I'm also a natural athlete. And while at this stage in my life, I've tailed off the weightlifting and more demanding sports on one's body and opted more for things like swimming, I do the Save the Bay (1.7 miles) swim yearly, biking, yoga and recently took up golf; much to the chagrin of my friends who hate the fact I'm picking it up so quickly.
