About

My full name is Trinidad Contreras, but I preferred to be addressed as Trini. I am a mother, first in foremost, a wife of twenty plus years, an 8th grade ELA Special Education Aide and now a student of Lamar University.

Currently, I am a full time SPED Aide / Co-Teacher at North Shore Middle School at Galena Park ISD in Houston, Tx. Concurrently, I am a full time online student at the University of Lamar which is located in Beaumont, Tx. My employment position lead me to return to college in order to obtain a BAAS degree and a Teachers Certification. I am ambitious and set high goals for myself, professionally and personally. I love working with special needs children because it is so challenging and never boring. I am extremely active in the teaching environment and create genuine personal connections to my students, since I have found that 99% of them need advocates for not only their education, but for their domestic lives outside of school. As a child, my own struggles with behavioral issues and education have resulted in a desire to teach children with behavior issues. While I find my current work in and around these students challenging and rewarding, I am concerned for the students whose needs go unmet despite current best practice methods. When these needs go unmet it affects their education and life trajectory. I have a passion for fulfilling these needs by researching methods and pedagogy for the instruction of children with behavior issues to seek ways that facilitate not only their learning but empower them to become active and engaged learners.

Goals and interests

Career goal

I have set specific professional goals for myself. I will become a certified SPED co-teach in a general education class setting by August of 2020. To achieve this goal, I will continue to attend Lamar University, finish all requirements for college graduation, receive my BAAS degree and then complete the Alternative Teacher Program. Once I have obtained my teaching certification and experience the full position of co-teaching for at least five years, I will then become the department chair of Special Ed. Department at North Shore Middle School by August 2025.

Graduate school interests

Obtaining my BAAS Degree will allow me to begin the road to teacher certification through the Alternative Teacher Certification Program at Region 4 in Houston, Texas. My work towards certification will afford me to move from a non-certified position into a role as a teacher of record at North Shore Middle School in Galena Park Independent School District. Concurrently, I will be working on a Masters of Education in Special Education. I envision myself graduating with a master’s degree in eighteen months. My long-term plans include pursuing a doctorate in Special Education with an emphasis on working with children who have emotional behavior disturbance (EDB).

Outside the classroom

I am an avid and obsessive contemporary and paranormal romance reader. I set a goal to read at least 100 books every year. I originally was not a fan of reading in my youth, but now that I'm older I find that it relaxes me and lets me travel to worlds and places I otherwise wouldn't. It's a healthy habit I will not tire of anytime soon.
