About
My name is Tyler Bos and I am a student currently study Mechanical Engineering at Grand Valley State University. My interest in engineering started when I was a junior in high school working on a drafting project in one of my classes. My interest in engineering was further reinforced by the encouragement of my father to pursue an engineering degree. I decided to study engineering at Grand Valley State University because their engineering program provides a hands on experience for students. I am now entering my senior year and preparing for my senior capstone project. When I graduate, I hope to acquire a job in the Mechanical Engineering field, primarily working as a mechanical design or mechatronics engineer.

Goals and interests
- Career goal
I have found through my studies in the field of Mechanical Engineering that my interests in engineering lay within three distinct job paths that I would like to develop into a professional career. One of these interests is within the mechanical design of machinery. The reason why I would like to pursue this career path is because my father is a machinist and fabricator by trade and has built countless machines for various companies. I have acquired some of his skills and knowledge over the course of my studies in mechanical engineering. This real world insight into machine design, coupled with the textbook knowledge, would make me a well rounded design engineering for machinery. Another interest I have in engineering is within research and development. This interest is primarily due to my desire to learn new and exciting things. Additionally, I am a very open-minded individual who is willing to consider and evaluate a diversity of ideas. I consider this open-minded attitude very valuable to the research and development environment. I also have an interest in the emerging field of mechatronics engineering. Mechatronics engineering focuses on the successful integration of mechanical, electrical, computational, and control aspects of systems or structures. Successful mechatronics engineering aims to create harmony between the four aspects of design with the intent of creating a more proper solution to a given problem. Mechatronics is a high level design philosophy that requires an engineer to have extensive knowledge in multiple fields of engineering.
- Graduate school interests
I have considerable interests in going to grad school for Mechanical Engineering. However, I will likely not be able to attend grad school until later in my life. This is because I am not only a young engineer, but also a young father. I strongly considered attending grad school during my junior year. Unfortunately, I had to weigh my desire for attending grad school against the needs of my family. I determined that attending grad school was not in the best immediate interest of my family. So, like any responsible father would do, I neglected to attend grad school and instead focus my efforts on addressing the needs of my family.
- Outside the classroom
I love to build models of military aircraft and American muscle cars. I most recently completed a 1:48 scale model of a B1-Lancer which measured close to 3 ft. long and 1.6 ft wide. I did not have any room to display it in my bedroom! I have also developed a new interest in designing quadcopters. I have recently invested a lot of my free time studying how brushless DC motors work and how they are modeled. I have also devoted a lot of time to learn the C++ programming language. Additionally, I like to play strategy games and play games with my daughter.
