Tyler Liljegren

Roadway Engineering Intern at Kimley-Horn (Civil Consulting Firm, St. Paul MN Office) Office work: Working with the roadway team to develop plan sheets for various projects in Minnesota. My team worked directly with MNDOT to uphold their standards ensuring the happiness of our clients. I became proficient in 2D CAD (Microstation), Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Excel, OpenRoads Designer, and Projectwise. This was my first experience in a professional workplace, so I was able to learn the values of collaborating with a team that strives towards the same goals. Field work: Visiting project sites that were currently under construction to gain the experience of how our work in the office relates to the actual construction of a project. I also visited sites post-construction to ensure the work was completed following ADA standards. Things like checking landing slopes, gutter in-line slopes, etc.

Goals and interests

Career goal

Civil Engineering is made up of countless disciplines that I have yet to explore, however my curiosity lies within Structural Engineering. During the summer of 2023, I interned as a Roadway Engineer at a consulting firm by the name of Kimley-Horn. My hope was to be a part of their structures team, but I was turned down the opportunity due to only being through two years of schooling at the time.

Graduate school interests

After I graduate in May of 2025, I plan to spend an extra year at NDSU to receive an MBA (Master of Business and Administration). Looking towards the future of my career, I'd like to step into the business side of engineering. Things like winning projects, leading teams, and making educated financial decisions for a firm really peak my interest.

Outside the classroom

Any kind of sport, favorites include Lacrosse, Basketball, Golf, and Football.
Fishing (Ice & Summer)
Traveling (Road trips with friends and family)
Snowboarding
