Victoria Marie Lucas

I am an undergraduate student, majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Spanish. I’m from Southfield, MI, however, throughout high school, my family relocated overseas to England. This foreign assignment, lasted approximately three years, and opened my eyes to global disparities. Although I’ve grown up in predominantly affluent areas, it has been only inevitable to come into contact with victims of social injustices.

Last year, my parents both underwent surgeries. Fortunately, they’re in a financial bracket that makes those procedures accessible. However, Michigan has a minority that regularly has to sacrifice the quality of their physical health because they cannot afford the procedures. I’ve truly grown to understand the magnitude of global impoverishment, to such a degree in which I want to use my education to reduce it. I hope to do so by aiding to those who don’t receive adequate medical attention. In particular, “aiding” via surgical care. Currently, I’m taking advantage of the resources that will help me prove how intertwining intra- and international health systems would give rise to solutions for the injustices we see.

Also, as an Undergrad, I plan to reincorporate traveling by studying abroad to Madrid, which will serve as an awareness experience. I hope to become more mindful of different pressures that determine the livelihood for people in Western Europe: including political influences and health. Being more knowledgeable will make me a more socially inclusive health-care provider, considering the fact that the US provides care for many nationalities, not just Americans.
