About

It is difficult today to imagine a Syria endowed with a legal system in which every citizen possesses fundamental constitutional rights. Eventually, however, the war will end and the reconstruction of a civil society will begin. I am applying for the Juris Doctor at the Chicago-Kent College of Law because I want to be a part of making this vision a reality and rebuilding Syria’s legal system

Goals and interests

Career goal

The American legal system remains, for all its imperfections, far more developed in terms of civil, criminal and constitutional law. By pursuing the JD program, I would be in an excellent position to understand further how legal systems function.. After all, there is an international dimension to the protection of children from abuse and to ensuring that women are empowered to participate equally in society. Yet, if we are to presume that we want a sustainable legal system in Syria in the future, these are issues of domestic law. The JD would build on my first year of exposure to American law through the LL.M., which contrasts sharply with what I have experienced in Syria.
I see myself as a bridge, not only while at home but also here in the United States. I can be a much-needed source of aid for fellow Syrians facing novel legal challenges. The harder it becomes for people like me to remain in the United States, the more we have an important role to play. I hope that a JD will allow me the choice of having an impact in both countries as I begin the long journey ahead of me in my legal career.
