About
About Me.
I am a 19-year-old Male who identifies as he, him, his. I have struggled with ulcerative colitis ( where the immune system attacks the large intestine) and autoimmune liver hepatitis ( where the immune system attacks the liver) since I was 13. As the disease became resistant to each immunosuppressant it was given, the treatment required stronger and stronger medication. As a result, I developed Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Luckily it only required six months of chemotherapy.
One summer later, I started my first semester of college. My ulcerative colitis continued to worsen at an accelerated pace, the pain of which impaired my ability to participate in my classes. I was now so resistant to my treatments, I had one option left; to get my entire large intestine removed. Three days after the first semester ended I was under the knife. The operation had some hiccups but overall went smoothly. The next four months were hell due to my ostomy bag. It had healed with complications. Causing excrement in the crevices between my skin and intestine near constantly. On several occasions I ended up in the emergency room or even admitted as the skin began to peel off in those areas causing excruciating pain. The worst episode occurred after the marital fire. I was no longer in my home environment because of the evacuation, so I did not have the proper supplies or environment to care for myself. My condition worsened as a result, I returned to the hospital and ended up staying for a longer period than I should have because I could not return home. This caused even more complications and the added stress on both myself and my family. When I finally returned to a normal course of treatment I got my ostomy bag removed and hooked up the plumbing to the new large intestine made from two sections of small intestine (the images of which are super cool).
At this point I am on my way to recovery, and am determined to make my life a success for myself and my family. This scholarship would go a long way in helping me live my best life.
