Honor Society® Expert FAQ
How is the Student Aid Index calculated?
The SAI is calculated using a federal formula applied to FAFSA information. The formula considers relevant income, assets, family circumstances, and dependency status, with allowances and exclusions set for the award year.
What to know before you act
It is not simply a percentage of parental income or the amount a family has saved. Which information is required and how it is treated can differ across households and award years. Avoid using an outdated expected-family-contribution calculator as if it were the current SAI formula.
Review the processed FAFSA for mistakes, and use the current federal estimator for planning rather than treating an estimate as an award. If income has fallen since the required tax year, the financial aid office can explain its process for considering documented changes.
Your next steps
- Use the instructions for the correct award year.
- Check income, assets, and dependency responses carefully.
- Compare the official summary with the college’s actual aid calculation.
For the next step, use the fafsa preparation guide. Organize documents, contributor steps, award years, and follow-up tasks.
