Honor Society® Expert FAQ

Do Pell Grants have to be repaid?

Pell Grants generally do not have to be repaid, but repayment or adjustment can be required in circumstances such as withdrawal, enrollment changes, or an overpayment.

What to know before you act

If you stop attending, the school may need to calculate how much federal aid you earned for that period. The result can create a balance owed to the college even when the award originally appeared as grant aid. A tuition-refund policy and federal aid-return rules are separate calculations.

Before dropping courses or withdrawing, ask for a written estimate of the effect on your grant, account balance, and future eligibility. If you receive an overpayment notice, respond promptly and ask which office is responsible for resolving it.

Your next steps

  • Contact the aid office before changing enrollment.
  • Request a revised account statement after an adjustment.
  • Follow any repayment or appeal instructions by the stated deadline.

For the next step, use the fafsa preparation guide. Organize documents, contributor steps, award years, and follow-up tasks.
